September 20 - October 20, 2020
A solo exhibition featuring work by Tom Kiefer.
“El Sueño Americano | The American Dream by Tom Kiefer will be on display Sept. 20–Oct. 20, 2020 at Abilene Christian University in the Brown Library as a part of Summit, an annual spiritual formation event at ACU. The art exhibition will be available both in-person and online at acusummit.org.
This exhibition features photography from artist Tom Kiefer’s ongoing project of the same name. Responding to the dehumanizing treatment migrants face in detention, Kiefer has carefully arranged and photographed the personal belongings of migrants that were seized and trashed by border officials in Ajo, Arizona – objects deemed “potentially lethal” or “non-essential.” Moved by the untold stories these objects embody – including items crucial for sustenance, hygiene, and comfort – Kiefer commemorates them in photographs akin to portraits and in so doing preserves traces of human journeys cut short. According to the Washington Post, “The items seem inconsequential, but the story they tell is anything but.” Also on view is a video interview with the artist and Dora Rodriguez, a migrants’ rights activist who crossed the border in 1980.”
