March 6 - April 10, 2020
MECA Houston presents “Allegory of a Chicana” by local artist Tina Hernandez. Taking influence from recognized painters from the past, this series re-imagines such paintings by infusing them with various facets of Mexican and Chicana culture. This modern take on old works is a way to connect the dots with the artist’s own culture thru a female gaze. Research of themes and issues that are relevant to the artist’s heritage, crafting, prop-making, self-portraiture, and photography all play an important part in this project. Fundamentally, this series for the artist is about digging into her cultural roots and making art out of her findings. Photographs along with some of the objects and props created and used within the imagery will be exhibited. The event is free and open to the public and is also wheelchair access available. This project is partially funded by The City of Houston thru Houston Arts Alliance.
