FLOURISH is a celebration of vigorous growth embodied by 4DWN Project protégé and East Dallas native Anthony Z. Padilla. Anthony, a self-taught artist whose first art show and mural headlined 4DWN’s inaugural event five years ago, has gone on to become a thriving artist in New York City. Lush floral scenes flow purely from Padilla’s internal vision, in stark contrast to the urban surroundings of his studio in Brooklyn. Today, Padilla’s work can be now found in galleries, renowned publications, and commissioned murals lining prominent public spaces of Manhattan.
As a wildly imaginative and highly skilled teenage skateboarder in Texas, Padilla earned the nickname “Junglebook.” Years later, he can still be found skating the streets of America’s most iconic concrete jungle before returning to his studio every evening to paint.
Padilla is a proud representative of 4DWN Project, a 501c3 whose mission is fostering growth and opportunity for youth in the community. Rooted in skateboarding culture, 4DWN’s facility includes a skate park, an art gallery, a performance stage and more, serving as an urban youth safe haven in South Dallas. 4DWN’s facility and nonprofit programs are all-inclusive, and completely free to the community they serve.
In Spring 2020, 4DWN is launching an Urban Farming initiative aimed at addressing the real and symbolic impoverishment of the South Dallas food desert. 4DWN has joined forces with other groups in the area addressing food waste, systemic inaccessibility and malnutrition, along with the opportunity gaps and poverty associated with it. FLOURISH kicks off this new initiative with live edible installations, a showcasing of local urban farms, chef cuisine and artisan alcohol-free cocktails.
