January 21 - April 4, 2020
An exhibition featuring works by Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Senga Nengudi, on loan from Art Bridges, alongside works by artists, Sherry Owens and Linda Ridgway. The exhibition will be on view at the University of Texas at Arlington from January 21 through April 4, 2020.
The show’s title, Bridges, refers to both the Art Bridges Foundation name, and to curator Benito Huerta’s desire to create connections, or bridges, between the internationally-known artists and the Texas artists he selected. He saw a relationship between the works, which he described as “alchemy, in that ordinary, mundane materials are transformed into art and sculptural installation.” Gonzalez-Torres ‘candy spill’ and Nengudi’s piece made from a rusty fan and nylon pantyhose, join a wall installation of hand carved and painted moon ice forms by Owens, and graphite drawings and a bronze sculpture by Ridgway.
According to the Art Bridge website, arts patron and philanthropist Alice Walton created Art Bridges in 2017 to share outstanding works of American art across the country. Her vision for the foundation was to collaborate with museums and institutions of all sizes and in all regions of the country, to create and fund exhibitions and programs. “Our country’s significant works of art should be available for all to see and enjoy,” said Walton. “Outstanding artworks are in museum vaults and private collections; let’s make that art available to everyone, and provide a way to experience these cultural treasures.” (artbridgesfoundation.org)
