UniPro Texas, a local Houston, volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit, will host its second annual Lumikha Arts Showcase. “Lumikha” is the Filipino word for “Create.” This immersive arts experience will highlight minority artists, their creations and their stories from their home countries as well as their own history in Houston. The showcase aims to highlight the rich, diverse talent which already exists within the local community.
More than thirty local artists will be featured through an interactive art gallery, live demonstrations and performances. The program will include work from various muralists, painters, spoken word artists, architects, dancers, and writers as well as others who craft art through different forms of artistic expression. 250-300 guests are expected to attend. The event is open to the public.
“Houston is a city known for its incredible diversity. UniPro’s mission is to bring forward the voices and stories that paint this town with culture, beauty and enlightenment. Our team is challenging these artists to leave their mark and make their vibrant crafts come alive. It will be an experience that will be sure to impress,” said 2019 Lumikha Director Roe Aragon.
Lumikhâ 2019 honored our presence with the theme We Are Here. Now, this year’s theme, WE HAVE BEGUN, aims to ask ourselves who we are. In what ways can we challenge our actions, values, movements, and how we communicate? The artists of Lumikhâ 2020 reflect on and deconstruct traditions, notions of colorism, gender constructs, intergenerational tensions, and social movements. Through these pieces and interactions, we continue to create a living, breathing “Kapwa” (“I am because you are”) experience.
