Wall Drawing 353 and lecture by Veronica Roberts as part of the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.
Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) was a leading figure of Minimalism and pioneer of Conceptual Art. He helped redefine art in the 1960s with his belief that “the idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” His wall drawings put forward a radical view of artmaking in that artists must only provide an idea for an artwork. LeWitt’s ephemeral wall drawings exist as a list of clearly defined instructions to be executed by others. Over 1,100 of his wall drawings have been installed in galleries and museums throughout the world.
Wall Drawing 353 (c. 1981) consists of five large-scale geometric forms rendered in black lithographic crayon. Led by a master draftsperson from the LeWitt Foundation, students will create the drawing directly on the walls of the Michael and Noémi Neidorff Art Gallery using LeWitt’s specified procedures and materials. Having only been exhibited twice before, most recently at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Department of Art and Art History is excited to share Wall Drawing 353 and LeWitt’s iconic work with the Texas art community.
Veronica Roberts is the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas at Austin and a LeWitt scholar. Her lecture, Like a Musical Score: The Wall Drawings of Sol LeWitt, will discuss the artistic practice of this important artist and provide historical context for his influential work.
This exhibition and lecture is made possible by Jane and the late Arthur Stieren. All events are free and open to the public.
