David Aylswoth presents a new body of abstract paintings called That Thing That Makes the Vines Prefer to Cling at Holly Johnson Gallery. Aylsworth’s new paintings evidence a preoccupation with dynamic, even explosive movement. While many of Aylsworth’s past paintings have seemed locked in a frozen embrace with the two-dimensional picture plane, these new works seem to be straining against the the restriction of the plane of the canvas. Aylsworth equates his new paintings with musical theatre, referring to his painted geometric shapes as interacting characters in a theatrical setting. It’s great to see one of Texas’ best abstract painters continue to expand his painting language, building new an innovative works on the sturdy foundation of a stellar career.
