March 18 - April 28, 2021
From the gallery:
“Reception – Friday March 26th, 6-9pm
For the covid safe parking lot reception, they will perform together, Kathy singing songs off her new record and David reading his poetry.
Kathy McCarty & David Thornberry have been married for twenty-two years. This exhibition will be the first time they have shown their work together. While Austin may not be able to fully engage in the yearly showcase of SXSW in person, we’ll hold a bit of the spirit here at Lydia Street Gallery. Additionally, Kathy will have an artist residency during the exhibition, so you may be lucky enough to catch her in the act of painting!
Kathy McCarty
For this exhibit, Kathy is fulfilling a dream of painting grackles, allowing the viewer to be immersed by the notorious birds, as in the HEB parking lot at Oltorf and Congress where most of the images were captured. The grackle is the bird everyone seems to have strong feelings about. They are noisy and numerous, and while many may wish them ill, many more, like McCarty have a growing fondness for our fine feathered friends and want to spread the joy.
David Thornberry
From his chapbooks of poetry to his mid century New American Realism aesthetic, Thornberry relishes moments. He views these two art forms as one, both being “little snapshots”. How does he navigate between these mediums that are one in his mind? “Some things are just clearly a poem, and some things are so visual, so formal…it’s all about what the light is doing.” Sourcing imagery from old photographs or video stills, he finds images that speak to him. Painting, hiking, and sleeping are the only times he relaxes. Well, Mr Thornberry, keep relaxing!”
