One of the major difficulties facing a Texas artist is getting your work out of Texas and into wider art world networks. Residencies are available all over the globe, true, as are fellowships and grants; but having a leg-up on the slew of other artists the world-over who are competing for those same spots is difficult. In steps San Antonio’s Blue Star Contemporary to give local artists a ten-fingered boost on hitting the international scene with their Berlin Residency Program. The residency program is open to San Antonio artists, shipping a cycle of them off to Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin in three month stretches throughout the year. Residents exhibit their work at the Künstlerhaus’ exhibition venue at the end of their stay. “It is difficult to express my gratitude for this emancipating time,” said one of this year’s residents, Cathy Cunningham-Little. “Without this residence I am doubtful that I could’ve come close to seeing how competent, hardworking, and opportunity driven artists and galleries are in other parts of the world.”

The application process for the 2014-2015 residency year runs May 15th through June 2, 2014, so get your CV and images polished up, SA artists!
