Best/Worst No. 6: Houston Arts Alliance

by Glasstire January 2, 2009

BEST: The Houston Arts Alliance weathered Wayne Dolcefino’s tabloid journalism and debuted 8 new public art projects, refuting his accusations of lack of production.

WORST:The public art process can be likened anywhere to diving for pennies in a crocodile pond, but the situation in Houston is exacerbated by the queen crock. Billed as a “Celebrated Artist and Art Activist,” Helen Lessick, HAA’s new Civic Art & Design Director, has the congeniality of a barrel of broken glass, and comes across as a pedantic, obstructionist champion of bureaucracy. And, according to some Houston arts professionals, her prickly condescension isn’t just reserved for artists… [Full disclosure: Glasstire recieves funding from HAA.]
