April 6 - June 1, 2024
The show is named Betty, after my grandmother (my father’s mother). She died in a car crash before I was born. One of the only photos that I have ever seen of her is cut in two (by my great grandmother, in order to exclude my grandfather.) Artists talk a lot about drawing a line, making a mark, or painting a brush stroke. I am thinking about images that we inherit and how a gesture like a cut (or a collage) can have just as much, if not more, power and emotion behind it.
My grandmother Betty was a teacher, and she started the high school dance team called the “Sandie Steppers” in Amarillo, Texas. She grew up outside of Spur, Texas, on a ranch that my great-grandfather pieced together to raise cattle. It is almost two hours outside of Lubbock, just off of the caprock, and it is still in our family today. All of the paintings in the show are about Texas and family, though they are about myth and distance, too. I never met my grandmother and I have never lived in Texas. (Though I was recently an artist in residence at The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, which was a real highlight of my career!) Anyhow, I will attach a press release and will share a link to a working folder of paintings that will be in the exhibition.” – KB Jones
PREMISES is pleased to present selections of post-war and contemporary work that inspire curiosity, connect ideas, and invite discourse around art-making and art consumption. We aim to endear, excite, and challenge our viewers with traditional, experimental, and experiential programming. The gallery, studio, and residency connect and engage the public with the art of our time, on site.”
