From Dimension Gallery:
“The Borderless: Together Outside series kicks off with a panel discussion led by Paloma Mayorga and artwork by Darcie Book. Mayorga will moderate a conversation about human relationships to nature and landscape with panelists Jamal Hussain, Kill Joy, and Mueni Loko Rudd, taking place on Sunday March 24th, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Dimension Gallery Sculpture Park. The conversation coincides with The Land Stares Back, an interactive art intervention by Darcie Book. Please bring your picnic blankets and pillows for lawn seating. Limited chair seating will be available for those who need it.
The Borderless: Together Outside series addresses topics at the intersection of art and environmentalism, led by Austin’s LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and refugee communities. Some of our most vulnerable populations feel unsafe and unwelcome in our shared outdoor spaces, and are therefore less likely to experience the joy and major health benefits of time spent in nature. Our goal is to make change in this area through the ongoing community series, and other collaborative efforts. The project’s background is aligned with the artistic practice of founder, Darcie Book, as it considers our complex human relationship with the land. The idea is that we look into a landscape and the land looks right back at us. The land is aware. It is alive, and it sees us.
This project is supported in part by the City of Austin Economic Development Department and made possible by our generous hosts at Dimension Gallery Sculpture Park, Colin McIntyre and Moya McIntyre.
Paloma Mayorga is an interdisciplinary artist and independent curator born and based in Austin, Texas. Working across photography, video, performance, and installation, Mayorga often uses her own body as medium to explore movement, place, and cultural identity in relation to landscape and ancestral uses of plants. Her art practice is rooted in accessing memories attached to plants, with a special focus on Latinx ecofeminist perspectives. Most recently, her work has been exhibited at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI, Artpace in San Antonio, TX, The Contemporary Austin, and Big Medium in Austin, TX. Currently, she acts as the Curator and Exhibitions Coordinator at Coronado Print Room.
Jamal Hussain is a New Media Artist working at the intersection of technology and science. Jamal’s background in technology has informed his current practice of using the power of light via the application of media artifacts. His designs explore innovative mediums and how these are becoming an extension of our consciousness. As well as studying the complex relationship between the transition humanity is experiencing within the 4th industrial revolution and its link to the health of our planet. Jamal hopes his work will lead to the awareness of our connection to the earth.
Kill Joy‘s work sits at the intersection where jungle meets desert. Her art practice interprets world mythology and ancient symbolism to highlight issues of environmental and social justice. Kill Joy organizes a print shop and art studio Kitchen Table Puppets + Press based in Houston, Texas with a practice in printmaking, painting and puppet making.
Mueni Loko Rudd is a curator, street scholar, and cultural preservationist prioritizing Black and other historically oppressed folks. Her one health work seeks to honor the remembering of harmonious relationships. Her academic scholarship has been published in Routledge, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and TEDx.
Darcie Book is an Austin-based artist, educator, and arts facilitator. Her work explores paint as object and architecture, and addresses our complex human relationship with the land. Book creates experiences that spark joy and connection through meaningful audience engagement. Her extensive exhibition history includes The Baltimore Museum of Art, Fort Works Art, Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Los Angeles), and The Contemporary Museum (Baltimore). Honors include the Belle Foundation for Cultural Development Grant, an unsolicited international award for achievement in the arts and humanities.”
