From JANUARY:
“Artist Statement
“I did it to myself,” a Solo exhibition, featuring new installation based work by Mark Anthony Martinez. The installation grapples with the idea of “the end of the world” and how the concept has just become a casual conversation point online, works of fiction and geopolitical circles — most especially post-pandemic. It is a conversation most dramatically foregrounded by the unceasing “doom scroll,” perniciously provided by algorithms across social media platforms. The work will employ the use of text, sculpture and original multimedia works to convey the tensions present within the artists day to day.
Afterall, it seems as though tensions everywhere, online and offline, have become heightened yet all the while nothing seems to really change for everyday folks.
Originally designed in 2019, the work illustrates the artist’s own anxiety navigating everyday life where the doom scroll becomes both distraction and reminder that everything is falling apart.
“I did it to myself” will be featured at 119 W Lachapelle, San Antonio, TX as part of the Second Saturday Artwalk.
