From Foltz Fine Art:
“Susu Meyer (American, b. 1954)
Susu Meyer was born in 1954 in Houston, Texas, and earned her B.F.A. at the University of Texas at Austin in 1977. Meyer has shown in galleries throughout Texas since 2002 and is best known for her large-scale paintings of Texas landscapes and rivers. Meyer’s continuously invites viewers into her landscapes with energetic brush strokes and familiar “Texan” motifs such as the Ocotillo cactus and lush Hill Country scenes.
Recently, Meyer began incorporating photogravure into her practice, creating more experimental and nuanced versions of the Texas landscape. Photogravure, a printing processes in which a negative image is etched onto a copper plate with light and chemicals. After the image is etched onto the plate, ink is applied and the image is then printed on paper. Meyer’s photogravures produce incredible textures, such as in the “Indian Creek #2” series, where the elegant complexity of grass is revealed with startling clarity. Each photogravure landscape feels discovered by Meyer, as she repeatedly stakes a seemingly ordinary views of nature and turns them into special places, full of memory and romance.
In addition to more traditional landscapes, Meyer utilizes monoprints to create more abstracted and less calculated interpretations of nature. Monoprint is unique from most printing processes, as an image may only be produced once. Meyer’s expressive abstractions capture the imperfect, yet perfect designs in nature recalling instances of water rippling, the profiles of mountain ranges or the radiating light of the sun. For over two decades, Meyer’s monotypes have played a valuable role in her artistic process, deepening her engagement with nature in new and inspiring ways.
Susu Meyer: New Works is on display at Foltz Fine Art from June 21st – July 22nd, 2023.
Artist Statement:
I continue to be fascinated with nature — the large and small aspects of what we are surrounded by daily. Light might catch my eye, form and texture might bring it closer into focus, but there is no formula. I am fascinated with the big picture, and the intricate pieces of the whole, striving to investigate what I see and experience in a personal, and intimate way. There’s a give and take in the work. Having the opportunity to put what I experience ‘onstage’ and letting it speak for itself is my goal. I am in awe of the beauty surrounding us all.”
