March 3 - April 7, 2023
From K Space Contemporary:
“When Words Fall Short is a collection of new work by painter, illustrator, and ceramic artist Amanda Shepherd. In this new body of work, Shepherd is exhibiting non-objective paintings, as well as ceramic objects and works that feature charming animal designs and portraits.
Shepherd’s paintings are inspired by American history and a great sense of impermanence. Whether working non-objectively or working to capture a pet’s expression, her paintings are spontaneous and expressive. She explains, “I have a passion for looseness … the feel of a moment in time. When I recreate it … trace it, redraw it, whatever … it’s just not the same.”
Originally from the Seattle area, Shepherd lived and worked in Corpus Christi, Texas from 2010 to 2016. During this time, she frequently exhibited her work at local galleries and served as the graphic designer for the Dia de los Muertos Festival. In 2014, she was selected to participate in the creation of the Loteria Mural and the Electrical Box Mural Project. Shepherd currently lives with her husband, Gary and her pet hibiscus in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Shepherd has been recognized nationally for her whimsical characters and animals. She is the illustrator of five children’s books – Rules of the Wild, Mouse House Tales, Such a Silly Baby, Who Loves Me, and Fiona Loves the Night. Her work is included in the collections of the Mazza Museum of Findlay, Ohio, the Burton Barr Library of Phoenix, the University of Arizona collection of children’s book art, and numerous private collections. In 2007, she was the recipient of the prestigious Ezra Jack Keats/Kerlan Collection Memorial Fellowship Grant from the University of Minnesota.
When Words Fall Short will be on display from March 3 through April 7, 2023 in the Starr Gallery. To learn more about the artist and the exhibition, please visit our website.
