From The Banton:
“Feeling Places explores the physical spaces of the home and how they inform and shape our emotional landscape. Each collage is made from charcoal rubbings of routinely touched surfaces in the home, cut and composed to convey their emotional import. Feeling Places I was made in the artist’s childhood home in the weeks preceding her parents’ move to an independent living facility. Feeling Places II was made in her current home in East Austin.
Melinda Barsales is an artist living in East Austin. She began making collages eight years ago as a visual meditation–a way to focus attention and combat negative self-talk around creative practice. By imposing specific parameters on her process, limiting herself to prescribed materials or working within time constraints, she has been able to find a rhythm for her work that feels nourishing and sustainable. The resulting pieces seek to combine fragments into a cohesive unit and to examine the relationship of the fragments to each other, as a metaphor for connection / disconnection to Self.
