March 9 - April 26, 2020
The Austin Central Library is proud to present 2020 Austin Quiltcon winner Irene Roderick’s large-scale quilts. As a multi-disciplinary artist based in Austin, TX, Roderick is inspired by modern, improvisational quilting that is an intuitive process of growing elements of color and shape to create a final composition, which is where the title of the exhibit, “Dancing with the wall” derives from for its fluid creative progression. Roderick joins the tradition of making utilitarian quilt with the fine arts’ convention that values individual, unique expression, joining the centuries old conversation of whether quilts can be considered as fine art or remain firmly in the craft tradition. It is an exhibition that all ages can enjoy and find inspirations and a show that must be seen by crafters, quilters, colorists and artists.
