The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) and the Advocates of a Latino Museum of Cultural and Visual Arts & Archive Complex in Houston, Harris County (ALMAAHH) have launched a call for proposals from local Latinx artists. The call seeks artists to create large-scale temporary sculptures to be displayed in the Cullen Sculpture Garden at the MFAH during its Fall Festival. The works will be on view from November 10 through 17.
Now in its third year, the Fall Festival is a celebration of the museum’s commitment to Latin American, Latino, and Indigenous American art. Last year, Krystle Holnes, Laura de León, Michelle Matamoros, Hugo Pérez, Rebo, and Ignacio E. Sanchez were selected to create Alebrije-inspired sculptures. This year’s theme Myths and Leyendas will highlight generational stories that exist throughout the Latinx diaspora. The open call references stories like the Mexican folklore La Llorona, the Salvadorian tale of El Cadejo, and the Afro-Colombian story of La Tunda.
Six artists will be selected and will receive a stipend of $5,000 to cover the cost of labor, materials, and transportation of artwork. The artists must be available to host a workshop during the first week of September, studio visits during the third week of September, and an artist talk during the Fall Festival on November 10.
The deadline to submit a proposal is Monday, August 5, 2024. Selected artists will be notified on August 19 and sculptures will be delivered to the museum between November 4 and 8. Questions can be directed to [email protected]. Interested artists can apply via this form.
