"Upon moving to Austin in 2001, Shults found himself homeless in a new city. He spent several
months finding his way off the streets, and eventually succeeded in doing so. In 2007, after teaching for many years, Shults learned he would be laid-off. He was met with an old anxiety he had experienced not so long before, yet began to look at it in a whole new light. Fresh with perspective, Shults returned to the spaces he had once used for shelter and began photographing them. His body of work explores the often overlooked spaces that for some act as temporary
physical and spiritual shelter."
