From the artist:
“Visitors to Marfa in Far West Texas can now peer through the large windows of Martha Hughes’ studio to see a special exhibit of works from the artist’s various Table series.
“I’ve always thought of my inclination to like staying at home better than traveling as a character flaw, but these days it seems like a virtue. I believe we can find inspiration wherever we are, and for many years my little kitchen table has been my muse. The white tabletop is like a blank canvas upon which objects change from day to day.”
Each body of work in the series comprises dozens of paintings that when viewed together resemble an animated film, in which small changes from frame to frame create a sense of the passage of time.
Works from six different Table series are on view through the windows, including large, detailed, realistic drawings; colorful hard-edge acrylic paintings; and small delicate watercolors.
Viewed through the windows, the studio becomes a sort of diorama, making it easy to see what’s happening there until indoor visits are possible again after the pandemic. The works are also on view at www.inplainviewmarfa.com, where there is a close-up image of every painting.
The exhibit can be seen from dawn till dusk every day through January 9. The studio is located on the west side of the Marfa Clinic building, 105 E. Oak Street.”
