From the Houston Center for Photography:
“dust watching, a new exhibition by Houston-based artist Austin Cullen, delves into how the world around us is portrayed in Western museums, tracing the entire journey of museum exhibitions from creation to storage. The exhibition illuminates how these institutions influence our perception of nature, using striking dioramas, interactive digital experiences, and scaled-down landscapes to offer unique insights into the earthly realm. Beyond showcasing these crafted environments, the exhibition highlights the intricate relationship between humanity, landscapes, and the illusion of the virtual realm; reflecting on the past when museums were our main gateway to unknown landscapes and contrasts it with the lightning-fast digital access we have today. In an era marked by a pressing climate crisis, dust watching urges us to reassess our bond with nature and prompts viewers to acknowledge the profound impact of institutions on our understanding of the natural world.”
