From Laura Rathe Fine Art:
“Laura Rathe Fine Art announces The Bigger Picture, showcasing new work by world-renowned artist, Hunt Slonem. LRFA will be hosting the opening reception on Thursday, January 13th from 5-8pm at their River Oaks District gallery (4444 Westheimer Rd.) Widely recognized as one of the biggest contemporary neo-expressionist artists, Slonem has catapulted into the collections of the world’s top museums, including the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney, among others. Hunt’s colorful canvases, filled with bunnies, birds and butterflies celebrate the vibrancy and beauty of nature, largely inspired by his childhood upbringing and subsequent studies in Nicaragua. His trademark style has been described as whimsical and extravagant, evident in his playful figures, bold color, and rich texture. This exhibition presents a glimpse into our world through the cheerful eyes of Hunt Slonem, reminding us to focus on the bigger, brighter picture and not let the daily worries wear us down. The Bigger Picture will be on display through February 20th 2022. ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Kittery, Maine, in 1951, New York-based artist Hunt Slonem is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, well-known for his Neo- Expressionist works featuring butterflies, rabbits, and tropical birds. Considered one of the great colorists of his time, Slonem’s gestural and extraordinarily vibrant portraits of wildlife immortalize and celebrate each species while honoring the exuberance and diversity of life itself. Slonem is also an accomplished designer, decorator, and restorer of homes. Championed as works of art in their own right, these spaces include not only the artist’s East Village loft and his 30,0000 square-foot Brooklyn studio, but also the two plantation houses he’s restored in Louisiana and Cordts Mansion located in the Hudson River Valley. Slonem envisions these historic homes to become part of his legacy, where future generations of artists can study and be inspired. Slonem’s work on these transcendent and colorful spaces has been featured in House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, and The New York Times. With over 300 one-man shows in galleries and museums internationally, Slonem’s work has been celebrated throughout the world. Among other projects, the artist has also collaborated with Lee Jofa for his art to feature in wallpaper and rug designs. Slonem studied painting at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, Vanderbilt University, and Tulane University. His work has been the focus of over 300 solo exhibitions worldwide and is held in the collections of more than 100 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R.
