A solo exhibition of fiber paintings by Emma Balder, Pareidolia explores the psychological phenomenon of seeing recognizable imagery within abstracted forms. Through Balder’s fiber painting process, where she reassigns the smallest parts of textile waste to a medium that functions like paint, forms begin to take shape within the fibers. The material takes on a new life; images of angels, seahorses or never-before-seen creatures appear in the fibers. This unexpected imagery delivers an impact that transcends the materiality of the work and provides substance to the obscure. Pareidolia displays works that extract and accentuate this imagery, alongside paintings that leave the interpretation up to the viewer. The works reveal mystical narratives and creatures that exist within both the artist and the viewer’s subconscious. Pareidolia investigates how we make sense of and interpret the abstract world.
