From Redbud Arts Center:
“Redbud Arts Center is honored to announce its latest exhibition, German Modernism, a compelling and historically significant collection of works produced in Germany between 1913 and the mid-20th century. This unique exhibition offers a rare look at the ways in which artists responded to a rapidly industrializing world and the intense social and political upheavals of their time.
The featured works reflect a bold departure from traditional norms, as artists challenged the rigid confines of the Kaiser-led government and later, the turbulent aftermath of World War I. Many of the pieces were created during the era of the Weimar Republic, capturing the unrest, violence, and shifting ideologies of the period. Notably, the exhibition includes the haunting Lustmord (sex murder) series by George Grosz and Otto Dix—unflinching portrayals of postwar trauma and moral disintegration.
The exhibition traces the evolution of German modernist movements, from Representational Art through Dadaism, Expressionism, New Objectivity, and Post-Expressionism. Several works included in the show have never before been exhibited publicly, offering a fresh lens into a critical era of art history.
Of particular significance are pieces labeled “degenerate art” by the Nazi regime, as well as rare, underground anti-fascist works and anti-Hitler portrayals by Otto Dix. Many of these artists faced censorship, persecution, and even arrest for their political dissent and refusal to conform.”
