From ICOSA Collective:
“Two Tides is a meditative journey in which ethereal tones float serenely over field recordings of the ocean. Like the rolling of the tide beneath the waves, Kathryn Shuman’s vocals and Alex Wand’s viola da gamba form subtle currents that draw the listener from moment to moment. Recorded in Los Angeles and Santa Cruz, California, this piece explores the ocean’s contrasts, ebbing and flowing between the fleeting and the timeless.
Kathryn Shuman is a singer/performer/composer. Her music combines skillful and versatile vocal technique with a broad and deeply creative musical palette focused on environmental sound and interaction with physical spaces. In addition to abundant original compositions and recording credits for film and television, Shuman has performed with companies including LA’s leading avant-garde opera company, The Industry, LA Master Chorale, LA Philharmonic, LA Opera, Jacaranda and has had work commissioned by Wild Up and the Floating Concert Series.
Alex Wand is a performer-composer currently based in California. His work emerges out of his interests in folk music, ecological thought, futurism, social practice art, alternate tuning systems, field recording, and dance/multimedia collaborations. He is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed at venues and festivals from California to Tibet such as REDCAT, MicroFest, Center for New Music, and the Xinghai International Poetry Festival. Alex is a Grammy Award-winning member of the Partch Ensemble and performs as a solo artist and in his music collective Desert Magic.
