April 22 - May 31, 2025
From Inman Gallery:
“We’re pleased to announce Shane Lavalette: One Sun, One Shadow, on view April 22 – May 31, 2025 at Isabella Court (3901 Main St). An opening reception will take place Saturday, May 3, from 4–6pm. Lavalette will be in conversation with Jon Evans, Chief of Libraries & Archives at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston on Saturday, May 10 at 4pm.
In 2010, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta commissioned Shane Lavalette to photograph the American South’s rich social and geographic landscape as part of their ongoing initiative, Picturing the South. Lavalette’s project, One Sun, One Shadow, is an extension of this body of work. Native to the Northeast, it was primarily through traditional music — the sounds of old time, blues, and gospel — that Lavalette had formed a relationship with the South. With that in mind, the region’s rich musical history became the natural entry point for this project and the resulting photographs. One Sun, One Shadow has been exhibited several times throughout the US and Europe since its debut at the High Museum in 2012. This is the project’s first installation in Houston where Lavalette is currently based.”
