From Un Grito Gallery:
“Un Grito Gallery is excited to present “As You Please” an exhibition of recent works by Andrea Willems. This show will open Thursday, May 1st and Friday, May 2nd, 2025, from 7-10 pm with a closing reception held on May 15, 2025.
Texas based painter, Andrea Willems, conveys personal narratives with themes around loss, place, and memory through landscape, still life, and abstraction. Through vibrant colors, thin veil like layers of paint, and material, her work highlights the fleeting and the temporary. She earned a BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2004 and is a New York Studio alumni. Recipient of the 2023 Dennis Diderot grant and selected for the 2025-2026 Berlin Residency Program at Contemporary at Blue Star. Their work is a part of the Galerie Diderot collection in Orquevaux, France, the Department of Arts & Culture, San Antonio, Texas, as well as private collections across Australia, New York, and California.
“As You Please”
“We live in an age of uncertainty, of constant change, full of inflated demands. “As You Please” is a response to the pressures from an uncertain world through abstraction. A silent protest. A reminder of our autonomy and permission to act in accordance with one’s own free will, however we choose to participate.
There’s something rebellious in play, in letting go, in remaining curious, in vulnerability, in allowing marks to exist without a fixed meaning, in not being completely sure of what we are seeing. It allows space for ambiguity, for feelings without explanation, for a kind of truth that words cannot capture. While we may try to impose order, make sense of shapes, and to recognize something within chaos, abstraction reminds us that sometimes, meaning is found not in certainty, but in the act of searching itself.”
