April 5 - May 10, 2025
From Heidi Vaughan Fine Art:
“HEIDI VAUGHAN FINE ART is proud to present a very special exhibition of artistic collaborations between beloved Texas artist Jeff F. Wheeler and 15 great artists living and working in Texas. TEXAS COLLABORATIONS opens Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 3510 Lake Street at Colquitt in Houston’s oldest gallery row. Doors open at 11, the party is from 5 to 8, and you are invited! Many of the artists will be present at the opening. Guests are encouraged to dress in a fun and creative way. An artists’ talk with many of the participants will take place on the final day of the show, on May 10, at 1 pm. It will be a discussion about the collaborative process in general and specific to how the particular works were made.
Artists collaborating with Jeff F. Wheeler for this unique exhibition include Jack Massing, Susan Budge, Bill Haveron, James Surls, Franklin Ackerley, Tiffany Heng-Hui Lee, Mathieu JN Baptiste, Hills Snyder, Janice Freeman, Richard Armendariz, Bryan Wheeler, Steve Cruz, Cruz Ortiz, Gary Sweeney, and Carlos Hernandez. Many of the artists will be present at the opening party.

TEXAS COLLABORATIONS is the gallery’s 57th show and the first to feature collaborations between Texas artists. Speaking of firsts, Jeff F. Wheeler was one of the first artists to be exhibited at HVFA (the third exhibition was his solo show, in fact). He has been active on the scene for over 30 years including as an artist, professor, and curator. He has been featured in or curated over 250 exhibitions and has shown his work all over Texas and beyond, including in Peru, France, Croatia, and Italy.
In his solo work, Wheeler believes in leaning into the creative process with no pre-planning, to enjoy the ride in the hopes of stumbling on new discoveries and tricks along the way. This explains his long love of collaboration, as it offers a way to surrender even more direction, leading to even wider horizons and new revelations. His collaborators have been many, including with his brother, Bryan Wheeler, James Porter, Jack Massing, and Daniel Johnson, to name only a few.

Heidi Vaughan is a fan of collaborations and the exciting and unexpected directions creative people working together can take. She and Gus Kopriva fostered collaborations between 88 artists and poets on the theme of love for their book, Liebesgedichte (Love Poems), published in 2022. TEXAS COLLABORATIONS is a continuation of her desire to partner with the most creative people in her orbit to express positive and uplifting work relevant to our times.
Even selecting the artist list for the show was a collaboration. The exhibition features a mix of some of Wheeler’s friends and favorite art makers alongside a few artists represented by HVFA and put forth by her as potential collaborators. Most of the works in the show are first time collaborations and will lead to more – but for now, this is the only place to view these playful and rare works of art. Come see what happens when Texas artworlds collide and collect some one-of-a-kind art!
