From Redbud Arts Center:
“Redbud Arts Center is excited to present “Icons”, an exhibition by German artist Daniel Sambo-Richter from Berlin, Germany. This compelling collection of oil paintings showcases Sambo-Richter’s mastery in both landscape and portraiture, exploring the intersection of contemporary issues and historical events.
In “Icons”, the artist juxtaposes seemingly serene, yet powerful landscape paintings with bold portrait works, inviting viewers to reflect on the tension between the past and present. Each work narrates a story, offering glimpses into pivotal moments in history while drawing parallels to modern societal concerns.
Sambo-Richter’s approach encourages audiences to first connect with the paintings on a visual and emotional level before uncovering their deeper significance. This layered engagement fosters dialogue, allowing the artworks to speak not only to individual viewers but also to collective experiences shaped by time and memory.
“The diptych “Land Without Name” refers to war,” explains Sambo-Richter. “This painting is complemented by a life-size depiction of the historical figure General Custer. I am interested in man as a being who, in his actions, is caught up in psychological patterns that characterize him as an earthly being.”
Redbud Arts Center is honored to bring Daniel Sambo-Richter’s vision to our community, offering a rare opportunity to engage with his insightful work.
Join us to explore how art can bridge the gap between history and the present, sparking conversations that resonate far beyond the canvas.
This exhibition is in part sponsored by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Houston.
Artist Statement
“Icons”
My art, especially the themes of my works exhibited in the ICONS exhibition at the Redbud Arts Center Houston, are based on a variety of contemporary issues, but also take up historical events.
Translated into large-format and strongly colored paintings, my focus is therefore on general processes and people who deal with constantly repeating events in the present and past in the sense of an ongoing continuity.
Important cornerstones in terms of content are the themes of power and powerlessness, resistance and opportunism, in a very direct sense but also in the sense of a cosmic effect of conflicting forces.
I am interested in these power relations, which can be found both in nature and in human society and are based on the same principles.
This is why my works, which deal with nature in the sense of landscape painting, are symbolic of the collective mental processes of our contemporary society. I have dedicated extensive series to these landscape paintings: Fire and Ice.
Free and open to the public.
