February 14 - April 18, 2025
From the organizers:
“January 22, 2025, StudioEight08 and Emergent & Co. are thrilled to announce “Unlocking Frequency,” a solo exhibition by interdisciplinary artist J. Johari Palacio curated by Keyheira Keys. The opening reception will take place on Friday, February 14, 2025, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, featuring a DJ set and artist talk by Palacio, alongside a unique motion photography activation by photographer Leta Harrison.
“Unlocking Frequency” is a visionary exploration of counter-mythology, inspired by Sun Ra’s philosophy of music as a transformative force and John Akomfrah’s seminal film The Last Angel of History. Through a series of transcendental scrolls and abstract works, Palacio invites audiences to reflect on alternative futures, collective existence, and the power of art to reshape perception. “Unlocking Frequency” offers an intentional, curated experience where art collectors, cultural enthusiasts, and community leaders can gather to explore new frontiers in art and sound.
This exhibition is curated by Keyheira Keys, an Austin-based curator known for her work at the intersection of art, storytelling, and cultural advocacy (“Where is Here”, “Black Girls Don’t Wear Red Lipstick”, Dream Con, and more). Keys collaborates with Emergent & Co. founders Tay Powers and Will York III, whose deep ties to Houston’s creative ecosystem bring a unique depth to this show.
Studio Eight08, co-founded by Tay Powers and Will York III, is a Houston-based gallery showcasing underrepresented voices as leaders in art, music, and community empowerment. Powers and York have created a space that celebrates creativity and connection, making Studio Eight08 the perfect venue for Palacio’s groundbreaking work. Recent highlights include the Leslie Cruz inaugural exhibition, supported by partnerships with Blavity/AfroTech, Soho House, and Expedia Group, as well as an artist talk featuring Houston Grand Opera’s Joel Thompson.”
