From ICOSA Collective:
“Erin Miller (she/her) is an artist based in Austin, TX. While using print as a starting point, she traverses between disciplines—painting, drawing, textile-work, and sculptural installation—to investigate themes of perception. Textiles, carpeting, dyeing, and bleaching inspire a material exploration beyond the printing press, conflating in form and subject matter theatrically. Movie sets, casino carpets, stage design, prop building, and the Bouba/Kiki effect serve as anchoring points, where techniques of doubling are incorporated. In 2022 she received an MFA from Cornell University, where she was the recipient of the Kip Brady Memorial Prize in printmaking (2021 and 2022) and the John Hartell Graduate Award in studio excellence. She has completed the Kahn Family Fellowship at the Ink Shop, located in Ithaca, NY and has mounted a solo exhibition at the Galveston Arts Center in 2024. Miller is an artist member of Mass Gallery and is a Lecturer and the Printmaking Area Lab Technician at the University of Texas at Austin.
An essential aspect of my practice is the exploration of materiality as both a visual and tactile experience. Tassel Alchemy embodies alchemy gone awry—improvisational yet considered, disciplined yet wild. Fragments of previous works are collaged together, suggesting a process of digestion and transformation. This metaphor mirrors the way serotonin helps process emotions, rearranging them into new patterns of emotional regulation.
Building on this exploration, my new wall installation expands upon my previous work at the Galveston Arts Center, titled Lucky Charm Casino, incorporating prints and screen-printed carpet tiles to create an immersive, tactile environment. Layered patterns and textures will transform the space, while print-related interventions activate the surrounding area. Through this Window Dressing, I deepen my investigation into how pattern and texture influence the psychological atmosphere of a place, inviting a sensory experience that resonates both emotionally and physically.”
