From Daphne Art Foundation:
“Daphne Art Foundation presents “Love Letter,” a solo exhibition by Laredo artist Alexander Barrón through Friday, March 7, 2025 at Casa Daphne, located at 1420 Washington Street in Laredo, Texas. Barrón’s new series of oil paintings, which he affectionately calls “Love Letter,” capture bonding moments of his personal upbringing. The paintings depict shared family experiences like birthday parties, carnes asadas, afternoon chats on the curb, and laughter at a dinner table. The work also captures defining moments of friendships that tell stories of growing affection, curiosity, and the artist’s personal journey of self-growth. Growing up in a bordertown, Barrón had a deep sense of family enveloped in deep traditions and rich heritage. At the same time, he was navigating a whole other alternative existence on the streets – of subcultures and music. To Barrón, it was interesting to reflect on and connect with “coming of age” emotions and complexities of two opposing communities: what he knew growing up within a close-knit family and the underground movements he immersed himself in. Barrón has been developing his artistic style more formally since he was part of the Cultivarte Laredo Artist-in-Residence cohort of 2023. Since then, he has honed in on his creative process. Barrón is a self-taught artist and it is evident that he has been taking time to let his new work develop. His loose brushwork and the way he works with color tonality creates an illusion of realistic images that are reminiscent of photographs. The spontaneous way he works emphasizes expression and makes his paintings come to life, and evokes feelings of nostalgia. “Love Letter,” curated by Daphne Art Foundation’s Executive Director Maritza Bautista, is Barrón’s second solo show in Laredo, where he was born and raised, and the place that has given him the foundation to explore his creative gusto.
Barrón has exhibited his artwork at Gallery 201, Laredo College, and the Laredo Center for the Arts. An array of his murals can be found throughout the city of Laredo; the latest including his “Great Futures Start Here” mural at the Northwest Boys and Girls Club. Barrón was also one of the lead artists in the creation of a 30,000 square foot, 17 column mural on the Lafayette Bridge Overpass in the Canta Ranas neighborhood. Casa Daphne’s gallery hours are by appointment. To schedule a viewing or for further information please call (956) 307-8984, or by email at [email protected].”
