From Charles Adams Gallery:
“BASTE stands for Body, Action, Space, Time, and Energy; it’s an acronym used in dance education to represent the five key elements that are considered when analyzing and describing movement in dance, encompassing the physical form of the dancer, their movements, the area they occupy, the rhythm and pacing, and the emotional force behind their performance.
Breakdown:
Body: Refers to the dancer’s physical form and how they use their body parts.
Action: Represents the specific steps, gestures, and movements performed by the dancer.
Space: Indicates where the dancer moves within the performance area, including direction, level, and pathways.
Time: Relates to the rhythm, tempo, and duration of movements.
Energy: Describes the emotional intensity and physical force behind the movement, whether it’s light, heavy, sustained, or percussive
In my new body of work, I propose the same can be applied to art making. Body, Action, Space, Time and Energy become an acronym for abstraction through movement in conception encompassing the physical form of the artist, my movements, the area I occupy, the rhythm and pacing, and the emotional force behind my performance.”
