December 14 - January 25, 2025
From Giant Runt Gallery:
“Giant Runt Gallery is proud to announce RADICAL ELSEWHERE, a solo exhibition showcasing the work of Dallas-Fort Worth based artist Matthew Ryan Johnson. This exhibition runs from December 14, 2024 – January 25, 2025, atGiant Runt Gallery, located in the Near Southside neighborhood of Fort Worth. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, December 14,7-10 pm.
Actively engaging with the philosophical theory of the same name, the work in Johnson’s exhibition, RADICAL ELSEWHERE, serves as a map, a diary, and a divining rod—tools that calibrate and trace his existence, reconcile the past, guide him toward the future, and conjure sentiment and awe for the now.
Using painting and drawing to explore the subtle space between his physical and psychic worlds, Johnson blends traditional forms of landscape, still life, and portrait with abstraction, diagramming, collage, found imagery, and ritual. Together, these pieces aim to give form to an undescribable world beyond what can currently be perceived, illustrating a radical elsewhere.
About the artist: Matthew Ryan Johnson (b. 1993, Detroit, MI) graduated with a BFA in drawing from Eastern Michigan University in 2016, and an MFA in painting from University of North Texas in 2021. Johnson exhibits paintings, drawings, and installations locally in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and has held solo and group exhibitions across the US (Detroit, Ann Arbor, Chattanooga, Columbus, Dallas, Fort Worth, among others). He currently works as a Painting and Figure Drawing adjunct faculty member full time at the University of North Texas, and part time helping neurodivergent youth as an Executive Functioning Specialist.
