“Somewhere Between Work and Play
After spending the past four years as Director and a studio resident of Clamp Light Studios & Gallery, Raul Rene Gonzalez closes out his time with his first solo exhibition in the gallery. Over the past four years, Raul has organized and curated several group exhibitions, working with artists throughout Texas and the U.S. For his solo exhibition, Raul will share a collection of new and recent mixed-media paintings and drawings, including the first public exhibition of his painting titled “La Reina” which is featured in the Latino romantic-comedy film “Say A Little Prayer” in AMC theatres nationwide beginning November 22. The exhibition will also include be a life-sized ballpoint pen drawing of Astro’s 2nd baseman Jose Altuve alongside new series inspired by Super Mario, family road trips, space, surrealism, and construction.

About the Artist:
Raul Rene Gonzalez, born 1981, is an award-winning multidisciplinary visual artist who incorporates a wide range of mediums and methods in his paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and performance-based work. Gonzalez is a Houston-native, but now resides in San Antonio with his wife and two daughters. Gonzalez earned his M.F.A. in Studio Art from University of Texas San Antonio and a B.F.A. in Painting from the University of Houston.
Raul’s artwork has exhibited extensively throughout Texas and the United States. His artwork is included in collections such as the National Mexican Museum of Art, the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum, Benson Latin American Collection, The McNay Art Museum, Texas Public Radio, and The City of San Antonio, and others. His work has been featured by Texas Monthly, New American Paintings Issue 162, Glasstire, and The Oxford American Southern Art Issue. Raul was won several awards and grants, including a 2023 Houston Endowment Jones Artist Award.
