Corpus Christi, TX, January 2024: The Art Museum of South Texas (AMST) is delighted to announce its newest exhibition, Photography is Art, showcasing the evolution and artistry of photography over three centuries. The exhibition will run from January 26 to April 7, 2024, with an intimate Opening Reception on January 25, 5:30pm to 7:00 pm.
Photography is Art explores various photography practices, from the early daguerreotype to contemporary inkjet prints. The exhibition features 51 works borrowed from four esteemed Texas art institutions, including the Art Museum of South Texas; the result of a partnership with The Carter and the Art Bridges Cohort Program created early last year. Accompanying the exhibition is a comprehensive brochure with a glossary of terms, providing insight into the diverse processes showcased.
Featured below, on loan from the Ellen Noël Museum of Art (ENMoa) is a color photograph taken under the night sky, Wagagi Thanchanku by Steve Goff. Part of a series capturing the Lakota people during the Wiwang Wacipi ceremony, this photograph masterfully combines composition and long exposure to convey a sense of movement. Daniel Zeis, Curator at ENMoA, praises Goff’s ability to capture a poignant moment stating, “The way that Goff was able to capture this moment along with the long exposure, gives the piece it’s sense of movement.”
The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, renowned for its extensive American photography collection, contributes to the exhibition, highlighting the remarkable art created in the medium. Photography is Art promises visitors a thoughtfully curated experience, challenging preconceptions, and affirming the belief that photography is indeed art.
“As a consortium working together to look deeply into our holdings, and to share aspects of art that we co-curate has opened our collections to our shared audiences through the lens of contemplation, exploration and imagination, traits we can learn so much from one another,” explained Deborah Fullerton, Curator of Exhibitions, Art Museum of South Texas.
