From Blind Alley Projects:
“Blind Alley projects is pleased to present Marshall Garth Thompson: Pillers, opening Saturday, January 20 with a meet-the-artist event Saturday, February 24, 3 to 5pm. In Pillers, an installation in which uniquely made pillows are added periodically throughout the run of the exhibition, Thompson explores the graphic design possibilities of using outdated technology of a 1980s electronic knitting machine modified with current microcontroller technology, giving it a new controlling “brain.” The artist explains, “this combination allows for use of various graphical software and apps to create imagery and patterns, but within the physical constraints of low resolution and a limited color palette of the knitting machine.” Fascinated by technologies possibilities and limits within this realm, Thompson maintains that “turning these knittings into pillows allows for a daily connection and interaction with art and design while continuing the original intent and purpose of the knitting machine.” As the engagement between original function and current day manipulation due to Thompson’s acknowledgement and knowledge of technology past and present transpires within Pillers’ growing installation, viewers find personal entry into the work based on their relationships and curiosities regarding the artist’s subtle and overt graphic, formal and technological choices as presented in the voyeuristic, windowed interior of Blind Alley.
