From Ivester Contemporary:
“Ivester Contemporary is excited to announce Cannibal, an exhibition of thirteen paintings by Ryan Sandison Montgomery that will rotate through seven positions on the gallery walls over the course of six weeks. The decision to rotate the paintings once per week during the exhibitions run references the endlessly moving news cycle and flood of information that we are all confronted with. Montgomery’s artwork uses satire, caricature, and poetry to explore the consequences of consumption and capitalism.
The paintings in this exhibition reference film, television, comedy, and advertisements, as well imagery pulled from AI, photoshop, and the artist’s own subconscious. Crucially, the imagery and text is hand-painted, which is Montgomery’s attempt to “slow down” the pace of the reference material. Hot pink is abundant, symbolizing a general superficiality, but also evokes urgency. The exhibition title, Cannibal, suggests that both the artist’s hand and the viewer’s involvement, picking through the carcass of “past” imagery.
Ryan Sandison Montgomery holds a BFA from Pratt Institute and a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Montgomery was a window dresser for over a decade in Manhattan and is currently a lecturer at Texas State University. His work has recently been featured in Artnet and Glasstire, and it is included in the City of Austin’s permanent collection.”
