“JUROR’S REMARKS
Thank you to Ann Shaw, the Texas Photographic Society and to everyone who entered into this year’s annual photography open call for giving me a really special opportunity to think about the ideas, processes and practices that are creating the ecosystem of photography in Texas and around the world, and I loved every second of viewing your work. Many congratulations to the awardees and honorary mentions, whose work I am so glad to begin to get to know. It is always a sign of the health of a photographic group or community that it was strikingly multivalent, and dynamically speaking to the many ways in which photography communicates human perception and the questions we ask of ourselves and the worlds we inhabit. My eventual selection of the mandated maximum of 50 works for the exhibition took multiple rounds of editing because there was quality and genuine creative and imaginative threads that wove between practically all of the entries to this year’s open call. I ended up with a final selection where each work was resolved on its own terms but also seemed to resonate with a deep appreciation, observation and inventiveness in describing human experience and the power of our senses. Collectively and thanks to all of you, I would describe my selection as a whole as an emotional and hopeful celebration of what we are, what we see and our power to be seen.”
