June 17 - July 22, 2023
From Plush Gallery:
“Dwayne Carter has been producing foto novelas since 2008. On the evening of the opening of his solo show, “Greed,” he will release his 10th publication, also titled “Greed.” He will simultaneously be showing new large scale narrative digital prints, based in the panel illustrations for the foto novela. The images for this show and foto novela look at the consequences of a culture which is consumed by greed and the lust for power. In addition, the artist will show small scale figurative relief sculptures made in ceramic and carved wood, which take an expressive look at intimate settings.
As a part of the opening night event, Carter will direct a brief performance by Thomas Riccio and Laura Hyunjhee Kim, which extends the meta-narrative of a fictional version of Plush Gallery set in his new zine. The performance will take place at 7:00 pm.
Over the years, Dwayne Carter has explored figurative narrative art through a variety of media, including zines, painting, interactive digital art, animation, video, and small scale sculpture. He has had solo exhibitions at the Kessler Theater, Heights Theater in Houston, the Ida Green Gallery in Sherman, Texas, Theater Gallery, Richland College, and at Plush Gallery. His animations have been shown in the Aurora New Media Exhibition, and his 2011 animated work, “The Dark Bible,” was included in the Dallas Video Festival. Group exhibitions have included CRCA Gallery at UTA, Plush Gallery, 500X Gallery, Ro2 Art, MFA Gallery, Mark Lombardi Galleries, the Bath House Cultural Center, and the Latino Cultural Center. He was co-organizer, along with Randall Garrett, of the 2016 Freefall Festival, which held numerous events across Dallas.”
