From Conduit Gallery:
“Conduit Gallery is honored to announce the first solo exhibition of paintings in the Conduit Gallery Project Room by Congolese artist, Jimi Kabela. Built into the broad, textural brushstrokes of Jimi Kabela’s large and small scale paintings are fragments of traditional African textiles that introduce structure within gestural paint applications. These fragments are collected by the artist from his native Congo and used to punctuate his non-objective paintings with geometry and pattern. States Kabela, “the exuberant, daring, and colorful patterns worn by the men and women of the Congo are reminders of my ancestors, language, and origins.” Though born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kabela moved to Dallas, Texas at the age of ten and through his paintings, captures the duality of these two cultures, and the “positive rhythms, and energies of both African and American cultural influences.” Jimi Kabela was born in 1990 in Mbuji Mayi, Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the middle child in a family of twelve siblings. Kabala moved to the United States in 2000 and has traveled to over 15 countries in the past ten years including Italy, France, China, Brazil and Equatorial Guinea. He is a recent recipient of the Outstanding Senior Award from the graduating Class of 2021 at the University of Texas at Arlington (BFA in Painting, Minor in Design), and is currently pursuing an MFA at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY.”
