From Camiba Gallery:
“Camiba Gallery presents EXISTENCIA , recent work by artists Daniel Rodríguez Collazo and Edgardo Kerlegand. The exhibit opens with a reception on Saturday, January 14th, from 6:00 to 8:00pm.
EXISTENCIA references both artists’ forms of expression as they relate to the human existence — one on the internal and physical forms of the human figure and the other on the forms that humans create and exist in.
Cuban artist Daniel Rodríguez Collazo’s main interest as a creator is rooted in the observation and analysis of architecture’s powerful connection with the individuals who inhabit it, from its functional to its subjective aspects. In his Resonancias Series, in which the works are created by painting and then carving into drywall, he takes apart and reinterprets lines and planes in a way that allows the viewer to focus on the positive and negative arrangements created by stark contrasts.
Mexican artist Edgardo Kerlegand has always been interested in painting the human figure, and the spiritual and the introspective aspect of his subjects has come to characterize much of his work. His drawings and paintings are as much about self-expression, contemplation and reflection as they are about the image of his subjects. He is influenced in the interplay of color and texture by the mark making of Asian Art, Orthodox Iconography, German Expressionism and Mexican Muralism.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Daniel Rodríguez Collazo was born in 1987 and studied in Havana at the Eduardo Abela Academy of Visual Arts, with an emphasis on Engraving. Working in a variety of mediums including charcoal, graphite, acrylic, ink, and drywall, Daniel’s artworks are consistently inspired by built urban landscapes, often of his hometown of Havana. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in many galleries and venues around the world including Peru, Spain, Germany, Italy, United States, and of course his native country Cuba.
Edgardo Kerlegand was born in 1964 in the Southern state of Chiapas. He studied at the National School of Plastic Arts (FAC UNAM) from 1985-95, where he spent time exploring composition and symbolism in figural imagery. A year spent with Hagiographer monks in Athos, Greece, in 2001 turned his attention to the practice of contemplation and active meditation, which became a major influence in his creative process. His work has been exhibited in Argentina, Bosnia, Colombia, Croatia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Spain, United States, Yugoslavia, and throughout Mexico. Since 2006, Edgardo has been creating and teaching in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.”
