From Lanecia Rouse Tinsley Gallery:
“Boundary Crossing is a collection of new oil paintings by Massachusetts-based artist Bruce Herman. His vibrant landscapes, Herman says, “evoke something of the spirit of my home, Cape Ann–– on the north coast of Massachusetts. It’s a place of raw beauty” and “of salt, sun, wind, and sea,” where Herman has lived for five decades. Expressing scenes from above and up close, Herman works to convey the deep time it took to carve out the rocky coast, while noting that his own moment exploring this wildness is merely temporary and cosmically liminal: “I am bold enough to believe that this quite personal borderland contains something universal––a kind of
internal/external paradox that we all live and share. We are walking contradictions, angel- beasts. Fresh water and saltwater merge here. Land and sea break into each other, and the
unique ecosystem that is an estuary is just that—land and sea and sky at the same time. A meeting of heaven and earth.” About the Artist Bruce Herman’s art has been shown in New York, Boston, Washington, Chicago, and Los Angeles––and internationally in Canada, Italy, England, Japan, Hong Kong, and Israel. His work is featured in public and private art collections including the Vatican Museums in Rome; Cincinnati Museum of Fine Arts; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; deCordova and Cape Ann museums in Massachusetts; and in many university collections. Herman has taught and curated exhibitions for Gordon College since 1984 and holds the Lothlórien Distinguished Chair in Fine Arts there. This will be his first solo exhibition in Houston, TX.
