From Brick at Blue Star Art Complex:
“In celebration of DreamWeek in January, Brick at Blue Star Art Complex presents Jose Villalobos: Joto Fronterizo/Border Faggot, a continuing major survey of Jose Villalobos’ work and the first held in San Antonio, TX, spanning the past six years of his artistic practice. The exhibition will run for one night only and will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2022 from 7 PM – 11 PM at Brick.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jose Villalobos is known for artistically protesting culturally-accepted traits of toxic masculinity through performance, sculptural installation and fashion. Joto Fronterizo/Border Faggot is the culmination of Villalobos’ most important works to date, in one exhibition.
Villalobos grew up on the U.S./Mexico border in El Paso, TX., and was raised in a traditional conservative family. His work reconciles the identity challenges in his life, caught in between traditional Mexican customs and American mores, as well as growing up with religious ideals that conflict with being gay. This exhibit confronts the derogatory terms and attitudes with which Villalobos continues to withstand. The root of Villalobos work lies in the performativity of his identity. His accoutrements are proud connections to his heritage but also reminders of the hate and homophobia that he has had to endure.
Villalobos is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Award and the Tanne Foundation Award. His work has been featured nationally and internationally at the McNay Art Museum, Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin, TX, El Paso Museum of Art, TX, El Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Atlanta Contemporary and the NARS Foundation amongst other institutions

ABOUT DreamWeek
Planted in a city that thrives in diversity, DreamWeek aims to bring people, their unique ideas and their myriad of voices to the forefront of a city-wide summit. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of civil rights reform, the DreamWeek mission is to lay the foundations of tolerance, equality, and diversity to create a platform where people across cultures and communities can discuss and exchange ideas, fostering enlightenment for the greater human experience. “
