The work of Texas-based painter Lee Albert Hill follows a strictly process driven formal vision. Characteristically his technique combines precise hard-edged mark-making elements in the foreground, with backgrounds, compositions, and textures that are informal in nature. Abstractions of their original inspirations, the resulting artworks also oftentimes obscure the true nature and process of their hand made production.Hills artworks impart a quality of permanence; quickly revealing a sense of genealogy, flatness, and inscribed time, all which are anchored by the basic ideas of mark making, symbology and written language. Simply stated – “Signs”. Cultures through the centuries have used signs to indicate places, give directions and convey stories; we see Hill using his artwork to do the same. Some artworks are inspired by specific moments at specific places. For example, “Elsinore Super Bloom” is inspired by the annual super bloom of poppies on lake Elsinore in California.Lee Albert Hill was born in 1963 in Dallas, Texas but grew up in the heart of the West Texas oil patch in Midland where both of his parents were professionally involved in the oil industry. He lived in New Haven, Connecticut after graduating from Texas Tech University in 1986 with a Five-year professional degree in Architecture and then returned to north Texas in1997. In addition to working as a licensed architect since 1991, Lee Albert Hill has been painting for twenty years.
His paintings have been shown across the US in a variety of museum, university, and gallery settings including; MarinMuseum of Contemporary Art (Novato, California),Angelo State University (San Angelo, Texas), University of North Texas (Fort Worth, Texas), Ryan James fine Arts(Seattle, Washington), Joseph Gierek Fine Art (Tulsa,Oklahoma), Art space 111 (Fort Worth, Texas), and K-SpaceContemporary (Corpus Christie, Texas). In addition, his work has been shown internationally in Seoul, SouthKorea; Berlin, Germany; Moscow, Russia; and Dublin,Ireland. Virtual Artist Talk: June 27, 2020 – 2 pmDetails to be announced. In the artist’s own words:“My work uses a language of precise mark making combined with a perception of nature that celebrates random patterns. The relationship between the random and the geometric plays out across the canvas as a story of our contemporary tension with nature.”
