January 21 - February 23, 2020
Space Is Real, an exhibition of artwork by Emily Fleisher (San Antonio, TX), Matthew Weedman (Crawfordsville, IA), and Jason Willome (San Antonio, TX), on view from January 21, to February 23, at the Wunderkammer for Ontological Observation (WOO Lab) in the Department of Art & Art History at UTSA. This exhibition is the first of a new exhibition program sponsored by the WOO Lab. There will be a reception on February 12, from 11am-2pm, and from 6pm-8pm in Art 4.01.16C.
Space Is Real is a selected exhibition of photographs, video works, sculptures, and drawings, created over the last 4 years by the participating artists. These works each explore issues of material meaning and pictorial representation in the context of space exploration, using materials such as salt, shampoo, ferrous paint, and found objects. Each artist uses pictorial space to leverage unconventional materials and found objects into new identities, relying suspension of disbelief and juxtaposition, and shifts in context to create meaning.
The WOO (Wunderkammer for Ontological Observation) Lab is a space for creative investigation designed around the idea of the Wunderkammer or cabinet of curiosities. The term Wunderkammer refers to notable collections of objects and curiosa that emerged during the 16thcentury as the precursor to the natural history museum. These unique collections speak of a time when the methodologies of art and science were closer together, which frames our goal for the space – a studio/makerspace where art students can explore how scientific methodologies can inform their approach to art making, and where students of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can engage the wonder they feel for their research within the expressive/conceptual perspectives of contemporary art.
