“Ritual Vessels” examines the vessel form in conjunction with the human figure to speak to the misuse of power. Both the physical body and vessel walls contain and shield their contents from the outside world. The physical body obscures the essence of a person by limiting what is openly revealed. While our outward appearance may provide clues to our experiences and beliefs, it still conceals the crux of who we are as we work on becoming fully human. External and internal pressures- the circumstances that demand our attention- are presented as deviations to the traditional profiles of the vessel form.
Mary Wuest is a visual artist, best known for her sculptural ceramic work focusing on power dynamics within interpersonal and societal relationships. She credits the opportunity to live in Japan for several years as a defining experience, both personally and in her artistic practice. There she gained an appreciation for the multivalent nature of ceramics; from its ritual and domestic use, to that of an expressive art form. Further research instilled a greater respect for the technical rigor associated with the process of creating ceramic artworks.
Mary Wuest graduated with a BFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2016. She will be completing her MFA in Ceramics from UTSA in December 2019. Her work has been shown in group exhibitions and is included in private collections. Wuest lives and works in San Antonio, Texas.”
