“Large abstract works to be on display, “Purple Gallinule Series” and “Ibis Series,” capture the essence of iridescent color found in the feathers of these birds whose numbers are in decline across America. For each of these works, fifty coats of metallic pigment mixed with acrylic paint were painstakingly applied to nineteen canvases that she carefully sanded between each layer to create the shimmering effect of a bird’s wing. The numerous half-cruciform canvases were purposefully shaped so to represent the Earth’s fragile environment. An effect of feathery- shadows reflecting a sense of movement results from lighting and in the way the canvases are placed over each other.”
