What one wears on one’s head is both fashionable and meaningful: fifty traditional hats from the DMA’s collection of African art and local private collections show how African headwear communicated information about the wearer’s ethnic group, gender, age, marital status, social and economic status, military rank, role in the government, religious affiliation, and profession.
