When I first saw Dave Anderson's black-and-white photographs of Vidor, TX (on view at Houston's Watermark Gallery through March 21), I thought they looked like decent images but certainly nothing groundbreaking or even particularly noteworthy. Haven't countless others (Jacob A. Riis, Walker Evans, Dorothy Lange, Russell Lee, Richard Avedon and Larry Clark, for starters) tread this territory before? So it was a surprise to see them featured in a full-page spread in today's New York Times, with the title "Town Shows Its Face, if Not Its Reputation." I can't help but wonder why the NYT would choose this exhibit to feature so prominently in its Sunday section. Of all the shows west of the Hudson, this is the most compelling one they can find?

It’s so wonderful that they published a piece about this. I’m impressed.
